本展は2016年以来になるサム・ストカーの個展になるが、これまでの彼の展覧会は「場」と結びつき発想されたものであったが、今回は普段公表していない作品を発表する機会になる。今回の作品のほとんどはペインティング作業の中での思考過程に結びついたものである。「リサーチ」することは彼のインスタレーション作品で中で、重要な役割を果たして来たが、今回の展示では描画という行為を通して直感的に制作することに焦点が当てられる。
この行為についてストッカーは次のように述べている。
「私の目指すところは常に人と関係を結ぶことであり、そしてリサーチもいつも人とのつながりを見つける方法についてである。これまでは多くの場合、不明瞭な情報を通して、このことにアプローチしてきたが、そうした展開で出来た作品においては、観客は私の意図とは無関係なところで、作品を解釈するよう導入されていたと言える。しかし今回の作品では、そうした方法への次のような疑問である。つまり、 リサーチという形式をとらずに、知覚から直接、または私の現前にあるものへの反応からのみ作られた作品とは、それは一体どのようなものになるであろうか。そしてその行為はどのように、他者と繋がることができるのか、また果たしてそれは可能であるのか。」
ストッカーはこれまで作品を創る際、それが、「ナルシスティックな陶酔に陥らない」ことを目標にすることの 重要さを主張してきた。これは作品というものが個人的なものへの返答であるということだけではなく、むしろ、より自然で自発的な表現形式であり、リサーチによって複雑に絡み合ったものではないところで、鑑賞者との交流をどう図るかを探るためである。しかしこれはこうした試みをアーティストが最初に行ったケースではないし、ラディカルな思想でもなく、むしろ本質的な試みであろう。人は自分自身の中にある考えや、思想を探求するべきであろう。しかし、こうした探求は他者にとって意味を持つことが可能なのであろうか？

A silent noise
This is to be the first solo exhibition from Sam Stocker since 2016. For the most part, his exhibitions have been site responsive exhibitions, but with this exhibition, he has taken the opportunity to show the work that he usually hides from public view. Most of these works represent an engagement with the process of thinking through painting.
Although Research has played a significant role in his installation work, on this occasion, the focus is to work intuitively through the act of painting.
Of this act Stocker said:
“My aim has always been to connect with people and the research is always about finding ways to do this. I have often approached this through an abstracted version of the information. In that version of the work people were invited to interpret the work regardless of the intention, But with this work, I am questioning this, what would it be if rather than working form the research I work only from intuition and response to the materials in front of me. How would or could that connect with others,”
He has insisted that the aim of the work is “Not to be Narcissistic.” This is not only to respond to the personal but instead, it is to see how a more direct form of spontaneous expression, one that is uncomplicated by the research can communicate, with an audience. This is not the first time an artist has attempted this, this is not a radical idea. But it is an essential one. One should explore the thoughts and ideas that exist in oneself. However, that can that mean to others?
